1. What brought you to ganbatte and what keeps you here?

I found myself plateuing after working out for quite some time at LA Fitness. I heard of Crossfit many times and was always curious about it, but hesitated to try it out. ( It seemed too intimidating). I finally got the courage and started  browsing around on yelp for Crossfit gyms around my area and stumbled upon Ganbatte. I was immediately addicted after my first session with JP. He had such a welcoming energy and deameanor about him that I did not feel at other Crossfit gyms. After a few classes I was hooked and became a member in no time. The members are kind, helpful, and always there to keep you motivated. It really is like family to me, and I've met some great people at MY "box"!

2. If you were to write your own bench mark work out what would it be?

Crazy 88

Buy in 1 mile run

88 Sit ups

88 Walking Lunges

88 Push Ups

88 Air Squats

88 Double Unders

3. What skill would you like to master in time for a zombie invasion and why?

Probably running as I'm not the fastest nor is my endurance the greatest and wall climbing.

4. What is your proudest ganbatte moment?

There are so many, as every time I accomplish a movement it's a proud moment.  (Strict pull ups, Handstand push ups, heavy back squats, cleans ,  rope and wall climbs )

However, I would say when I finally got my double unders, after whipping myself so many times would be my biggest accomplishment. It entails a lot of coordination and timing.

5. What were your goals and  what did you do to get there?

Learned that CONSISTENCY and PERSISTENCE is key in reaching my goals. My goals were to shed some fat ( get cut) and still PR on my lifts. I wanted to feel good and move well.

JP and I had a deal/bet that in 3 months he could get me to where I would want to be, or at least pretty darn close. So for 3 months I did more work (“extra credit”) , was super strict on my diet, and took pictures of everything I ate and my work outs.  This made me accountable to my coach. He was my voice in my head and I didn’t want to disappoint him.

The goal wasn’t to lose fat/ weight quickly. (which I always look for, a quick fix) The goal was to create good habits.  We started with identifying WHY this is important to me, and used that as a motivation / fuel for my goals.

3 months after. I have trimmed down, lost some fat. I move better around the gym. My handstand push ups and pull ups have tripled. ( I didn’t have to reset each time, would bust out multiple reps.) I PR’d on my lifts ( I’m lifting heavier).  My energy around the gym and throughout the day is so much better. I move better,  but most of all, I have disciplined myself to have better habits.  AND! Its summer time! I can rock my sports bra and swimwear with tons of confidence.

6. What was your diet like and what would you recommend to other people?

I always try to keep to a Paleo diet about 85-90% during the week, and have a cheat meal here and there on the weekend. I'm not a big drinker but I do have a major sweet tooth and a huge foodie so I try my best to balance everything, without depriving myself too much. I would recommend food prepping at home. You have control of your food. Keeping it clean and portion control, which was key to my progress. If there is one thing that stuck to me and really worked during the 3 month challenge with JP was  food intake vs work capacity is what JP would always emphasize. He would also say, you are what you eat.  I know I’m not recovering well or I’m not performing well on my lifts during my cheat days.

I also added cardio in my work outs.  Jp, would program some interval workouts ( run, row, or bike) -  I only ate what was necessary. I ate for fuel. The key was to always portion everything. I love my fitnesspal app (for counting calories), and would always food prep at home.

7. Ganbatte as a verb and how do you enact on it?

Ganbatte is something I try to practice everyday. It’s a lifestyle . My mantra. My everyday. #bodybyganbatte #ganbattedmybody
