Since the start of the New Year, things at Ganbatte have looked a little different than usual on Monday , Wednesday and Friday mornings. The second class of the day ramps up not with massive barbells and athletes failing as they try to hit a new one-rep max, but with moderate - low weights, high reps, and a lot of running.

One thing is always clear towards the end of the year, many have a good understanding of what they really want. The same applies to me. In the last month, I was able to take two weeks off from the gym, which made me assess what I want to do in 2015. I thought about where I want to take Ganbatte. There are TONS that I want to do and achieve. – I needed to write them down.  After writing a whole page length of goals,  and defining them –( meaning breaking them down to why?, when?, and how?) . I realized, this whole page of goals and game plans defines me…. what I really am about..


This question begs an answer from all my athletes, "What defines you?"  - Your goals do. And since we are talking about goals, we need to discuss what you want in 2015. Do you want to be a better mother or father? Are you marathon-bound? Are you looking to become a better competitor? Run Faster?  Lift Heavier? Over – all strength?  But let's take it to a next level. If those extra pounds are what you want to shed, ask yourself why it is so important, then write it down. If better parenting is what you want, ask yourself what's lacking, what you want, and write it down. And if crossing a marathon finish line is what you see in your future, that hard work is going to need some motivation. Be clear about why this is important to you. So breaking it down and then writing it down defines who you are.

Imagine that it's Friday night. After working hard all week you're ready to treat yourself or your loved ones to a good time. Since we live in one of the best cities in the world for entertainment, the options are endless. You could venture to Osteria Mozza where their priciest entree is $78, or get a few rounds of $15 cocktails at the Ace Hotel. Or maybe you'll head to Sushi Gen to sample on sashimi and beer. Sooner than later, you'll easily have a tab of $150 dollars. Or you stay at home to watch movies and order in. And even that option adds up.

I've known the Morenos since they jointed ganbatte in 2011. The family are 5 and 6:15pm regular athletes. They were in every class and every single Ganbatte event. They have challenged themselves by doing 5ks,10ks, half and then full marathons.  But in the last few months, the family has been experiencing something unimaginable.
