Over the summer I wrote “We all think a bunch of stuff about ourselves, and most of it is complete crap.” Each of us is slightly self-deluded and 95% of the time the delusions manifest in selling ourselves short, talking ourselves down and shortchanging our abilities.

If we accept that sometimes we’re harder on ourselves than we should be, however, we also have to accept that there are many things about ourselves that we could improve – things we may not even know about. Sometimes our self-delusions tear us down, and sometimes they blind us to our weaknesses. We may think, for example, that we’ve nailed a particular skill when in fact there are details we could improve. We may think we’re open minded and receptive to constructive criticism when in fact we brush off what our friends and coaches tell us to think about.

This happens when there is a gap between intention and behavior. Imagine, for example, that your coach repeatedly says you need to track your knees out more consistently while doing weighted squats. You intend to follow that direction, and try your darndest to focus on that knee. You think you’re doing better. You feel like you’re doing better. You feel it so strongly that you can barely believe your ears when your coach tells you the knee is still collapsing inward. You think it’s not. Your coach says it is. You think it’s not. Your coach says… you get the idea.
