At Ganbatte, we’re used to feeling sore. Anyone who has ever tried a WOD knows it pretty much comes with the territory. Over the last few weeks, however, our legs have learned a whole new kind of sore, thanks in large part to a new squat progression that has been testing our physical and mental limits.

We know the moment well: you’re in the middle of a particularly hard workout or training session. You feel fatigue starting to set in. You do your best to ignore it. You keep going. The feeling grows stronger. You keep going. Suddenly panic is tickling against the edges of your brain. Your lungs and heart seem to have a three-alarm fire system clanging away at full blast. You are convinced you are about to die.

Of all of the Crossfit “selling points” I’ve encountered through the years, there is one that makes me particularly uncomfortable. It has to do with efficiency. It usually comes up when I see or overhear someone who is thinking of trying Crossfit for the first time, but hesitates when considering how much time he or she has to commit to getting into shape. “No, you should totally try it!” I’ll hear their friend say. “It’s amazing how little time Crossfit takes. The WODs aren’t long – most of them are under fifteen minutes – but I guarantee, you get an amazing workout every time. It’s super fast.”
